Microcavity effects and the outcoupling of light in displays and lighting applications based on thin emitting films

چکیده

The outcoupling of light from thin films with a high refractive index is a problem occurring in lighting and display applications based on different technologies. Three different solutions are suggested: one-dimensional microcavity structures, roughness in the emitting layer, and roughness in the substrate/air interface. The advantages and drawbacks of these principles have to be evaluated for different applications. # 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. PACS: 78.20. e; 78.60.Fi; 42.70.Jk

Exceptionally efficient organic light emitting devices using high refractive index substrates.

Organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) are now used in commercial cell phones and flat screen displays, but may become even more successful in lighting applications, in which large area, high efficiency, long lifetime and low cost are essential. Due to the relatively high refractive index of the organic layers, conventional planar bottom emitting OLEDs have a low outcoupling efficiency. Various...

Layer-by-Layer, J-aggregate Thin Films with an Absorption Constant of 10 cm in Optoelectronic Applications

Thin films of J-aggregate cyanine dyes deposited by layer-bylayer (LBL) assembly exhibit exciton-polariton dynamics when incorporated in an optical microcavity. Such LBL, J-aggregate thin films can be precisely deposited in a specific location in an optical microcavity, enabling the development of previously unachievable optoelectronic devices, as for example, the recently demonstrated resonant...

Colloidal quantum dot light-emitting devices

Colloidal quantum dot light-emitting devices (QD-LEDs) have generated considerable interest for applications such as thin film displays with improved color saturation and white lighting with a high color rendering index (CRI). We review the key advantages of using quantum dots (QDs) in display and lighting applications, including their color purity, solution processability, and stability. After...

Simulation of Fabrication toward High Quality Thin Films for Robotic Applications by Ionized Cluster Beam Deposition

The most commonly used method for the production of thin films is based on deposition of atoms or molecules onto a solid surface. One of the suitable method is to produce high quality metallic, semiconductor and organic thin film is Ionized cluster beam deposition (ICBD), which are used in electronic, robotic, optical, optoelectronic devices. Many important factors such as cluster size, cluster...

Enhanced Outcoupling in Organic Light-Emitting Diodes via a High- Index Contrast Scattering Layer

Despite high internal quantum efficiencies, planar organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) typically suffer from limited outcoupling efficiencies. To improve this outcoupling efficiency, we have developed a new thin (∼2 μm) light scattering layer that employs air voids (low-index scattering centers) embedded in a high-index polyimide matrix to effectively frustrate the substrate-trapped light, in...
